dodgy bikes
Now the bro sold his blade a few weeks ago. He was of the opinion that he is too old to ride etc.
So this morning I get the call, will I go with him to Manchester to look at a CBR600. So pick him up and talk about it on the way. CBR600F OK he knows what they are and is comfortable that it won't be a flying machine, It is simply a 2002 bike with 20,000 on the clock and his for £2051. It turns out he was the highest bidder on Fleabay for it but it had failed to make reserve and the guy had contacted him and they had arrange a price. Knowing the address I was a bit suspicious of the bike, but our kid had done an HPI on it and it all ran true. 2 Former owners, no recorded accidents, finance, Vin matched reg/MOT and V5 etc. We get there, money hidden in car as we did not want to go to this area with a couple of grand in the pockets and the bike is on the driveway. So an opportunity to look at it without the owner present. Every fastener was rusting, the chain screamed at me but why. Not only was it dry but it was scraping on the side stand it was so loose there must have been 3 inch of travel. Front tyre was illegal, (So much for the new MOT), The sprocket was that hooked that I don't think it would have lasted the journey home. As we walked away and back to the car we talked and estimated it would take £500 to bring it back up to average condition. But with the absolute lack of maintenance that was evident on the bike itself what was the engine going to be like. Opinion was probably a good buy for a dodgy dealer who would probably pull a couple of links from the chain, put on a 2nd hand front tyre, polish it, pull the rusting fasteners, wire wheel them and refit and knock it out to some poor mug for £3000, but as a personal bike no way. How could anyone ever let their pride and joy get into this sort of state. Thank god he never won it on Flea Bay. |

Mine got into what you would call a "state" because I daily ride it over a hundred miles and never have time to clean it. Yes Ive let my chain go in the past [ie when Id just bought it] - now I know better and know how to adjust it so it doesnt any more. Doesnt mean it hasnt been serviced properly or the engine looked after. And btw, they did a test on a CBR6. Ran it for 25k miles with no oil change and bugger all damage. Its very hard to blow them up. Not impossible - a check on the oil would give you an indicator if he'd at least topped up oil or changed it and that would indicate how bad the engine would be really. |
Tim you and your Bro did right
