Knee down - Illegal?

Hi everyone,

I was having a chat with some mates the other day about things you can and can't do (well not supposed to do  ) out on the road.

If the police see you doing a whellie or a burn out then they'll go for you - but what about getting your knee down when your doing a legal speed for the road?

non of what you have mentioned are in themselves illegal, but if the rozzers deem you were driving without due care and attention they can 'ave you sonny

Think that is the key to it all Carl.

I've pulled wheelies past cops before but not intentionally, for example pulling out to overtake someone or getting in to fast moving traffic, nothing said. Likewise spun a wheel up the highstreet for 10 yards when it was wet.

An interesting one I would like to know about is standing on the pegs. The roads round Edinburgh are so bad and caused so much damage to my bike I'm standing on the pegs more and more just to avoid more buckled wheels throught he pot holes!

If knee down was outlawed explicitly I think sliders would have caused the same hubbub that black visors and carbon plates did for 'offroad use'.

Mmmm... thought that they were downright illegal! :)

I put this in the wrong section didn't I

ADMIN!

Can you please move it to Talk & Issues?

Thanx in advance

nice name change, just need a new pic too

i wouldn't of thought standing on the pegs would be a big problem, especially if you explained this to local bobby, he'll know what theroads are like anyway, we do similar on some really awful roads round here

The police are within their powers (sadly) to do you for anything they fancy. While wheelies, wheel spinning, and knee sliding aren't illegal per se, the blanket charge of driving Without Due Care and Attention (or even Dangerous Driving) will cover it nicely for them.

If you're unable to talk your way out of things once stopped, then unless you have a truly independent witness (not one of your mates on the bike behind) then you've got no chance at the magistrates court whatsoever.

Best to use your eyes and be as discrete as possible when attempting the illicit acivities afore-mentioned. We consider them fun, the law doesn't - and they'll be the ones that win.

There's an article in MCN (letters) about a guy that pulled a wheelie (he reckons unintentionally) and the police did him for dangerous driving (riding?) and he received a 12 month ban! Seems harsh.

I can see a small accidental wheelie or a small spinup might be excusable in the right circumstances, but how exactly would one talk their way out of a kneedown??

“well officer, I wasn’t actually trying to get my kneedown, just go round this corner as fast as possible without doing it …”???

TBH I would have thought this would be the easiest to one to get away with, as it's the only one that could be argued offered more control.
