Fork Oil Replacement

Can you replace the oil, without taking the forks off the bike as the Haynes manual says?

Yes you can, but the real question is - do you want to?

For those that have removed the stock oil, and seen the sludge that comes out, I think many would agree that there's no real substitute for actually removing the fork and allowing it to drain for 10 minutes before refilling.

Sucking the oil out using any method, isn't going to get it all out, and measuring the final air gap when refilling is a bit trickier too.

There are only two ways to properly drain your forks of all oil and residue. The first is to remove your forks from the bike, take out the internals and drain upside down.

The 2nd is to leave the forks fitted to the bike, take out the internals and turn the bike upside down.

I know which one that I do.

Just had mine replaced (2001 17,500 miles) and the difference is amazing. Feels much more planted into corners. Cost £60 by local suzuki dealer.

No.

Not if you want it to be anything like right.
