K1 and K2 differences (SV650S)

Can anyone help with the differences between the two engines?

I know the K1 came with an all black engine and cylinder casing, also only a carbed model.

I know the K2 came with a black engine casing and silver cylinder casing (as like mine). This came with carbs and a form of injection?

Are there any other differences?

My question is, if i was doing an engine swap, could I put in the K1 motor and swap over any parts from my K2 engine to bring the K1 up to K2 spec? Is there any differences with the actual engine itself (compression, mixture, cams etc)?

I have a very mechanically minded dad who's helping me with the swap, and i've found a K1 engine for sale locally. Im just wondering if its better and easier to wait till i find a K2, or will the K1 work ok (if any parts are swapped over).

Thanks in advance :)

This ain't gospel, but I've always been under the impression that there are no mechanical differences between any of the curvy engines other than an extra baffle in the sump that was added very early after the SV first came out.Can anyone confirm this?

K1 and K2 engines are the same, bar the colour. No differences in carbs either. There might be minor manufacturing differences, but to all extents and purposes they're identical. Same compression, same ports, same capacity etc.

Guess thats what I needed?

How comes they say the K1 is carbed, and the K2 is carbed and injected though?

K3 is injected.K2 all carbed.K3 was the first pointy and got injection.

Look in the first few pages of a Haines Manual. It provides all the history / changes of the SV through the years.

Both engines are the same colour — silver ;).

Yeah, but the K2 is pink on the inside. Honest :)

Daimo, what says it's carbed and injected?

Just something i've picked up from someone who talked BS I think.. Never took it as gospel, but no-ones ever posted the differences really.

So really, I can go for a K1 or K2 engine (why make them different colours, different model numbers if they are the same bike/engine though?)

Because they were trying to hide the fact that the bike was 4 years old and never changed I think ;) Same reason they changed the plastic colours. There were wee changes across the years, like the slight fork internal changes (and one less pinch bolt) on the K1, and then the adjustable preload on the K2, for example. Just that apart from the mucking about with oil baffles, the engine was unchanged.
