clunky gears

I have just bought a 2001 sv650. I am really pleased with my new purchase exept for one thing.... the gears changes, particularly going up the gears, are clunky and not that smooth. I have been riding 8 years so I am not a complete novice so I dont think this is just rider error?!

I ask if the sv is prone to this and is it something I just need to deal with or is there an adjustment I can make, or any other suggestions! The other thing is it has only done 2000 miles..... could it just be newness!

Cheers :)

Generally te gear change on the SV is pretty smooth. Check the clutch adjustment, and the chain condition and adjustmet are correct (Check it's well lubed). Has it had it's 1st oil change at 600 miles? Check that with the bike level (you may need a friend to hold it up) that the oil level is between upper and lower marks in the sight glass. Also check that the gear lever is adjusted well for you

Sorry for the shotgun style post but they all make a difference.

Thanks Jambo. The oil has been changed and the level is good. I am happy with the gear lever...which leaves the clutch adjustment and chain.... chain is tight, but more lube is always good! Will fiddle with the adjustment. My previous bike was an old gs500 with a high mileage, maybe this newness is throwing me.

Other than that I am really pleased with my bike, and it is handsome as! Shotgun is good Jambo, cheers for throwing up some ideas :)

Chain should have between 20-30mm of free play in it at it's loosest point (I'd be supprised if a 2,000 mile old chain had tight spots) when the bike is on it's side stand. Give it a wiggle

sorry mate, misled ya with 'the chain is tight'... i assumed you suggested it loose, the chain tension is fine!

Hi all, this is my 1st post on here n love the site, i've just bought a 2000 sv650 with less than 10k on clock. The gear change can be really bad, setting off from lights i struggle to get it in 1st gear some of the time (just seems to jam solid) so i have to set in 2nd. Its booked in for a service tomorrow so lets hope it sorts it out.

(I am just cut and pasting this off another post.)

its easy to take off the gear shifter, pull it off the peg, clean and lube up the bushing in there.
I guarantee that it will feel better.

Search about to see what sid has to say about it.

If it won't go into 1st from neutral just flick the clutch in and out.
