Why Do You Have A Bike?

In the 'old' days a lot of people had bikes because they couldn't afford a car. Nowadays, for a lot of people I think, it's more a hobby. Certainly many do very few miles a year, won't ride unless it's 70 degrees and not a cloud in the sky(WIMPS  )

So what is your reason for having a bike?

For Pete and I it's simple................it's our life. It's what we go to work for, to pay for our biking. :D

Originally I owned a bike and rode all year round in all weathers because I couldn't afford a car although in fairness I'd had a motorcycle as a kid and loved it.

Now I have one purely for fun and summer commuting.

I don't ride in all weathers anymore because I don't have to so its not worth the extra risk to my life and insurance premiums when I have a car on the drive.

Indeed now that I own a car its hard to justify the risk of riding a bike at all let alone in less than ideal conditions but for me the fun outweighs it.

To ride?... to get to work... I see the car as the "second" option, I had a bike licence before I had a car one.

I started riding 12 years ago as it was the only way that I could commute into work in London. Now it's still the only way that I can commute into work in London. By car it would take another 30-60 mins to get to work, and by tube it's an extra hour and a half as I'd have to do into central London and then out again.

Plus riding is probably the most fun that you can have in leathers on a public highway.
