Can someone tell me how i find the symbol for a tick in word i've looked in insert symbol but can't find it

perhaps you could use the mathematical symbol √ :?

When you are in the Insert Symbol dialog, change the font to Windigs, then its character 252.

You can also assign a shortcut code to that character. For a 'tick' I assign Ctl T I so every time I want a 'tick' just have to press Control T and I.
