IT question: recommend me a 17" LCD, please!
As per title, I'm currently window shopping for a decent, affordable 17" LCD monitor, 1280x1024 mandatory, DVI input is a big plus.
So?... :D Many thx in advance! |
Go on get a 19" atleast, but Samsung make some good monitors as do Viewsonic. Sony are usually too expensive.
Any special features needed? |
We buy Samsung SyncMaster920N's most recently. Really good compared to other stuff I've had (for the money).

I've got 4 Samsungs (3 17" 710N, 1 19" 913V) and a Samtron 17" 73V here at the office. They look ok-ish, but the lack of DVI puts them off for my personal taste, and I really don't feel the need for the 19" with the same resolution... |
Go Dell.
I have 3 Dell LCD's (2x20", 1x24") all wide-screen, all do VGA, DVI, S-Video and Compsite video - the 24" adds Component and is high-res enough to do HD TV. Picure quality is VERY nice. Cant remember the res's tho. Previous job used the 20" square versions - also very nice/good/ So I would say, look at whatever 17"/19" Dell are doing with the inputs you want. I dont think you can go wrong. But then I have been known to be wrong. Samsung are also supposed to be good, Sony is just over-priced as usual - but their X-Black (hi gloss) displays ARE REALLY GREAT - my Vaio Laptop has one and its very nice - but not worth the price really (was an insurance replacement following theft - got to love new-for-old policies) |
AFAIK, there are two companies, that make almost all LCD panels for almost all manufacturers. They each make a number of varieties. But, essentially, the guts of a monitor are all the same from vendor to vendor.
Having said that, I have a Hitachi CML175SXWB. Which is lovely. |
Dell are good. Got one arriving on Thursday.

PC World (here in the UK) have Hewlett Packard 19" widescreen LCDs (1440x900) for £150. Much nicer than a 17" for about the same money.

Mine's an LG, not sure what model cos I'm at work at the mo...
Works ok for me though and I think they can be had for not much. That vague enough for you? |
We use Samsungs' at work. Very nice good picture quality. The Dell ones as somebody else has said are also pretty good to.
