Chain knackered after 12500 miles
and its scottoiled!!! Sprockets where worn but ok, but chain totaly stretched.
I hope the new one that i had fitted lasts a tad longer. The chain before i got 24k out of and that was the sprockets that went 1st and ate the chain. |
Out of interest, how often were you adjusting it?

In the past, on my old chain, it hardly needed adjusting. I think that it was adjusted, say 12 times in 24k. The sprockets ate that one |
My front sprocket is starting to curve off the teeth, only a little but thats after about 10k since install. Its only realy needed adjusting recently. I hope mine is not starting to go.

Are you running standard sprockets?A smaller front to lower gearing can put wear on the chain, and what make was it?Popular wisdom is that the OEM(DID?)chains are best, and I have a pet theory about the rivet links on new chains.I think it is crucial that they are fitted exactly right,or that link becomes the weak link.Too tight, and the O rings get squashed, and too loose and the grease gets out(if they put any in).Either way that link wears and tight spots develop, causing the rest of the chain to run at the wrong tension and wear faster.Just my theory,I could be talking crap.

Sounds about right to me. I've never got more than 13'000 out of a chain. Never used a scottoiler but always lube myself...er...my chain regular. Ahem.

What chain? I think my Tsubaki's just gone through 12,000- the chain's fine but the aluminium renthal sproket's gasping.

Our first chain lasted 32,000 miles, and would probably have done more, but we had it changed when we had our second big service done. That wasn't scottoilered, just lubed after every ride, cleaned down once every couple of months with parrafin, and adjusted as needed.
We were so impressed we stuck with the oem chain and sprockets when we had them changed, and will do again. |
I've had best luck with oem sprockets, I have a scottoiler and get 30k-35k out of a set of sprockets & chain, I personally never touch the chain, the only time it sees maintenance & adjustment is when it goes in to dealer every 3500-4000 miles for service and when tires get changed
