Pulled into a Garage that I use on the outside of London (Blackheath Common Esso Esso), needed some juice and thought i'd check the tyre pressures.

Ohhh, new machine, damn, coin slot, their gonna charge. Ahh thats ok, its only 10-20p.......

Nope.. ASked the attendent how much, 50p. "are you having a laugh, 50p!!!! You are kidding yeah"??

Nope, 50p for air. Its been free for the last 7 years........

I wont be using that garage again then...............

50p indeed for about 1-3psi of air (all i need, tyres still feel ok).

I like the pumps you get at many supermarkets these days ... they are digital, bang in the presure and let it do the rest ... free too!! :)

Be careful using garage air lines, the gauges can be wildly inacurate.

I am completely obssesed (read anal) with tyre pressures BTW :D

Its a digital one, has been for years now.

No reasons for it. I can accept a small charge, hell you pay for everything these days, but to go from free to 50p, just for air is a joke.

Its damn air, we already pay for water......

You are paying for use off/upkeep of the compressor, that isn't free to buy or run!! ... breathing the air in the forecourt however, is as of yet not chargeable!!

Esso and Total suck like that. Find a Shell station. They are normally free. I brought a key ring digital reader from Halfords which is handy checking first thing.

Buy a foot pump. £10 at all good motor accesory outlets.

It's their own trade that will suffer; when stopping to put air in my tyres, I usually think "may as well top up on fuel at the same time".

Can back fire on some people. One of the first signs of things going wrong in an engine are fuel consumption. If someone continues "topping up" they'll never be able to keep track.

Plus, air is free at Sainsburys!
