Anyone here know anything about computers?

Hey,

Thinking of buying myself a new computer. I know a little about computers but i'm getting a little confused by which processor is the best. I want the computer for general applications and also a bit of gaming too.

I've been told that the Athlon chip is best for gaming? I have had a look and there are a few variety of those ones too?!! :?

If anyone knows anything about the relative differences / strengths of any of the processors out there it'd be a great help. :D

What exactly do you want the PC for? Where are you looking at buying from and what's budget?

Athlons are the best budget chips but the new pentium Core Duo chips are amazingly fast.

Like i said I do want to be able to play games on it for the next few years (if that's possible to do with a computer anymore!), as the one i use now can't handle all of the modern games.

It doesn't have to be amazingly fast or special. I'll be using it for work / Uni but not for anything like video editing or watching t.v or movies.

Thinking of spending between as little as possible and £500 but that's just for the base unit as I already have a decent monitor and some gear.

I would no longer say that is true nor has it been for a few years... The athlon chips are just as good as the intel chips... its all just hype. Just get what you can afford at the time, as the best one changes from week to week. So whole the duo core is best as the moment, don't be surprised to see that change.

Do you want to get into building your own machine or just buying it ready to go? You could try www.dell.co.uk, they have good deals on all the time. If you want to go cheaper there is the Dell Outlet Store which sells discount Dells that have been reconditioned or end-of-line stock etc.
