New pistons and rings @ 28k miles???(UPDATE)

Hey guys,
serious advice needed, my sv's in for her 30k service, and the mechanic has rang me and said she needs new pistons and rings??!!!!!! as he did a compression test and shes 60-65% DOWN  .(or so he says)
Shes only done 28k miles and ive never felt like shes shes running weird...(2000 w reg curvy)
Rang two other garages who i know well and theyve BOTH said this guys trying to pull a fast one, help. :(

(update)
Its not good, had a second opinion and yup, there IS trouble round that area
List of bits im gonna possibly need:
2xpistons
2xpiston rings
2xhead gaskets
2xbase gaskets
2xcam chain tensioner gaskets
2xsmall end pin
4xcirclip
8xhead bolts

Cost- £433.88, plus i could need a new barrel.

Ring the garage back and say "Thank you very much. I can't have the bike in for the moment and also need to look at finances before committing to this expense" Pick the bike up and take it somewhere else. It isn't a difficult test to verify that it needs doing. I wouldn't accept a compression figure as the sole arbiter of the works being needed - it should be noticeable from emission figures and possibly even from the coolant.

While anythings possible, for that level of work I'd say no thanks, get the bike back and take it for a 2nd opinion. If the other garages say it's fine never go back to the guy who's diagnosed the piston rings  if someone else says the rings are shot then go with the best price.

The low compression could be down to things other than piston rings in any case, so keep an eye on your coolant and oil for a milky colour as this could be head-gasket. Alternatively he could be taking you for a ride....

you cant trust anyone these days a second opinion is always useful.

All good advice.Does it use much oil?Have the valve clearences ever been checked? If it don't burn vast amounts of oil and the clearences are ok and it runs ok I'd leave it alone.

doesnt burn alot of oil/isnt smokey.

Second opinion time. And if it does need them (unlikely, I reckon, unless it's been abused or you're unlucky) then I'd think (though can't swear) that a set of pistons and barrels from a blown-up engine would do you just as well as brand new, and should cost pennies. In fact, I've got a set I could probably give you, if they're not rusted or damaged- never checked. Then it's just installation labour.

But, that's getting a bit ahead, I reckon it's more likely the mechanic that's faulty :)

Sounds extremely fishy. Wouldn't even bother getting a second opinion if it's running right and not burning or contaminationg the oil. If you do get a second opinion and he's trying to rip you off, name and shame the w*nker.
