indicators in brake lights
just been brought the indicators that go in your brake lights. i was wondering if this is legal...does it mean i have to keep my original indicators on whilst using these...any help would be much appreciated as i don't have much time to return them if they are illegal!!!!!

I believe having the integrated indies without seperate indicators is illegal, hopefully someone will clarify that. I have an integrated tailight and a set of mini indicators too. You're probably better with that setup anyway as having the integrated tailight alone isn't quite as obvious. I have a curvy, for what it's worth.

Well it's not going to be legal if you don't get a clear rear lens cover at least or they're going to be red!
I'm guessing a new light fitting is in order anyway as you need to get two different feeds to one bulb, a la combined brake/rear light on a car. You don't say how they mount so I'm guessing there. I wouldn't use them as a sole source of indication, esp on a bike. I think LED indicators are complete crap with a very narrow viewing angle, LED's only give off light in one direction and not even to the rear so reflector fittings are useless. Ever been to the side and rear of a car with factory LED indicators, like on a roundabout? Very hard to see, especially on big BMW's where the side ones are LED too! Not all new technology is a step forward, LCD guages didn't make it past the Austin Maestro and Astra GTi before we all realised they were crap! Oh dear, I'm having a rant. |
any pics

Nobody will be able to see them - if they look at all they will be looking in the "traditional" place for them, will see no flash, and drive into you! The current trend for having the front indies of a car right beside the headlight makes them damn near invisible. They're meant to warn people of what you're planning to do and if they don't do this you're asking for trouble. Think about 4x4's - they started putting their indicators and brake lights up beside the rear sceen but people kept looking at the bumpers, the "traditional" place. As a road user I should not have to hunt for such things - it takes up reaction times and increses risk all round.
Leave the damn things where they can be seen!!!! <<Get's down from soapbox and stalks towards coat>> |
