Counter part driving license?
 

So my missus is French and has a French driving licence (and lots of other French attributes, but thats another story).

She got a NIP in Watford last week for jumping a red light. In her defence she was in a queue of cars and the recorded speed was 17mph so yep she did wrong but she was a wee bit unlucky. She promises she won't do it again.

Apparently she can apply for a counter part driving licence (D9) and get the points put on that, the alternative is go to court and run the risk of getting a grumpy judge.

Anyone got a non-UK EU licence and done the same thing? Is there a downside?

She could always say it was you driving and shovel the points onto your license :lol:

and then if u say it was her driving, they can't pin it on either of u!!

Say the French dont recognise the rider as the camera is rear facing, its only uk that fail to comply to EU rules on cameras.

The car is registered to me (condition of me getting a bike was she got my car!) so the NIP came to me first. The lads at work said I should take the points for her too, but, er, well, insurance is geared against blokes so probably will cost us more if I get the points, and we might go the court route which means she won't get any points. So I grassed her up... :?

Taking someone elses points is serious business, if you get caught , you'd be charged with "Perverting the course of justice" which could mean a spell in jail :shock:

Oh, yeah, thats why I dobbed her in then, twas my duty! :)

But back to the original question, any one got any idea how a counter part licence for a non-UK licence actually works?

I know a portugese fella that has been living in the UK most of his life. He holds dual nationality.

He's wrecked more cars than I can remember, and at one time, got pulled over by the police for driving a, as he puts it, 'borrowed car.' His problems were made worse by the fact that the car's legal owner was a retailler of recreational substances (wording carefully for the forum). The car had a combat knife in the door pockets, and things it shouldn't of had in the boot.

For that, he was very lucky to avoid jail, but he did loose his licence (due to build up of points more than anything). The licence he lost was his UK one, and the courts in the UK have (apparently - according to him) no right to withdraw his portugese licence. He also never bothered to inform them of the fact he has a portugese licence, so it may be for that reason that he's still got it. Now if he gets pulled over, he produces his portugese licence and forgets to tell the officer that he's had his UK licence taken away.

I'm waiting for the day the UK justice system puts 2 & 2 together and actually makes something sensible out of it. But I can see that dual nationality has it's advantages.

BTW magistrates (in my experience) are normally quite civil and friendly :wink:

Try www.dvla.gov.uk . As for the Portugese guy, can't the Police check on driving licences over the radio at the roadside now? If so, surely his disqualification would come out?
