Ohlins shock questions?
 

My ohlins needs servicing, the local k-tech guy can do it for £70 8)
He said a new spring would be a extra £60, but can i get it cheaper anywhere else and what sort of spring am i looking for?

Go to demon tweeks, i think they have Falcon ones for £30ish.

You need to know the ID, length and spring rate.

On a shock that cost ~£600 new, £60 isn't much to spend on the correct fitment Ohlins quality spring!!!

It'll probably have the .85whatsits per whatsit spring in it as stock, if it was bought off the shelf. The £60 won't be for an Ohlins spring though, it'll be Ktech's own most likely. Nothing wrong with that, mind. You could get a titanium one for about £300 :)

What weight are you going for? I'll have a Ktech 105N going begging next time I've got the shock out, going to get a 100 put on it- I was recommended the 105 but I always thought it was too stiff for my tastes... did a load of riding around with heavy things on the back the last few weeks, it handles better with about an extra 10 kilos on the back seat :lol:

Dont see the point myself in penny pinching when using good kit. Hell you might as well then just have any old piece of sh*t and stick an Ohlins sticker on it!

Chasing pattern parts just for the sake of saving a few quid doesn't always work IMHO. Just remember the amount of R and D that companies like Ohlins put in to their products? For me that is worth paying for. :wink:

A decent spring's a decent spring, regardless of what label it's got on it. As long as the rates are the same and it doesn't compress excessively over time, it's all good.

But Northy that is where my point about R and D comes in Ohlins would have tested their components for such behaviour, would the same be said for a copy part?

I know there are strong arguments for your way of thinking and in truth there aint no right and wrong. It's just personal feeling I guess. :wink:

Given that the K-Tech springs and the Ohlins ones are made in the same factory and use the same machine to print the name and numbers on the side I wouldn't worry too much.

I would second the question about why you need a new spring though. Either the shock didn't come set up for you whcih it should have done if you bought it new or you got it second hand from a race bike.

The standard spring shouldn't be too far off on the road and I would hesitate to suggest anything harder unless you are way outside the typical rider weight.

I'm just over 9 stone and the shocks done about 35k which is why i'm thinking of changing the spring...would it be bad?

SVRash, where do you keep all your internal organs? :) Stock spring ought to be fine for you, don't know how tired it'll be but I'm sure Ktech can tell you. I've got one that's seen 20,000 miles in the garage if you want it though.

Mine came equipped with the standard spring... From speaking to Ktech, they reckon that's pretty common as a lot of shops simply sell them from stock. I know my old dealer used to have them sat on a shelf "I'd like an Ohlins shock" "There you go, that'll be £450". The original owner of mine thought his had been set up for a 15 stone rider, guess what, standard spring. Which is rubbish, but there you go.

I'm just 11 stone, but the 105N with my raised rear's worked much better than the stock .85. Still not right though.
