A Tip to Get Rid of Fur on Screw Heads & Disc Rivets etc
 

Hi All.

While freeing off a sticking rear brake this evening, I remembered a tool I have in my toolbox that I have not used in about 18 years. Seeing the fur on the front disc screws I decided to try and remove it using this tool and bingo it worked, really well. The only place it couldn't get to was inside the allen key hole. The beauty is this tool is double ended so I could trim one end to make access to recessed screw heads easier such as those used on the Fairing on the SV K3 S model and other areas around the bike.

What is this tool you ask? Its a commutator cleaner. I was issued with this when I was a mechanic many years ago. I used it when I spent time in an electrical unit reconditioning centre overhauling starter motors, dynamos, alternators and distributors.

The one I have is about 12 cm long and 1.2 cm in diameter. It is made of fine, closely packed fibers with an outer material wrapping. A quick rub on the screw head following the contour and no more fur. I also used it on the disc rivets and the area of the disc around the rivet area that is bare metal.

The good thing about this is that it does not leave a milky white residue like metal polish. I did a quick search on google and found sites selling commutator cleaners, but none like this one.

Non-metallic pot scourer works just as well, the green ones I use.

Brass wire brush works a treat for cleaning up furred bolts and bits of metal.

Angle grinders

....can't argue that they'll remove the fur.... :lol:
