Help, I am confused. I only get on the internet when at work and bored! My kids are growing up and I feel I would like to invest in something at home, but I haven't a clue how to start!

My needs from a computer: internet access, download music/video and transfer to phone/mp3, put my digicam images on, e-mail, letter writing etc,

I have no landline as I don't use the phone! So I want the cheapest option of landine, and boradband of some sort!

Also What memory size/make/model etc would peeps recommend, it feels like a mine field!

any half decent quality, low spec, new PC will do what you want.

Dont worry about the specs, just go with the comapny and price that suits you.

For that I would shot for a nice desktop. As for the manufacturer, thats down to taste. I currently have a nice Dell Dimension 9150 which is fantastic

I would aim for:

512mb RAM minimum
250Gb hard drive (typical in most average DT's)
17" flat screen
Pentium 4 or better, or equivalent - Most CPU's will handy interenet and basic commands without a sniff.

If you like to play games look at getting more RAM(at least 1 gig) and a decent graphics card. And if you can afford it, a good monitor with something like a 16ms repsonse time or better

Sounds like whatever Dell will give you for less than £300 - Desktop or laptop you chose

Please don't buy Dell unless you want to be posting for help on the forum as soon as anything goes wrong (we deal with Dell at work, and handle all their shipping for them etc). Their customer service is TERRIBLE (IME).

Also, linco, it would appear you buy at PC World. Nothing wrong with that, so long as you can pay your credit card bills!

Personal opinion only folks.

The 'puter is pretty much covered above, a basic PC will handle your needs. The Broadband itself will be hassle if you have no phone line, but there are wireless options in some areas of the country. Also look at cable if you are in cabled area.

Many of the new players in broadband such as TalkTalk or Sky offer a good deal if you already take some services off them, look at them.

If downloading video content then basic 512kbps ADSL based broadband will struggle. go for at least 2Mbps.

You lot a great. Thanks loads. If I asked the same questions in a shop I would get sales patter that I wouldn't believe a word of. Thanks again....will see how I go....into the deep. Then you can have me posting everyday instead of just on a Thursday and Friday! :wink:
