Chain Oiling
 

While I am still thinking about a Scottoiler, can anyone recommend what I need to oil my chain?

How?

And how often?

I think that the scottoiler might become a victim of Christmas!

best bet is spray lube, even Halfords carry it, applied every 200 miles or should be .

What is there to think about? It works. It sprays a little oil over the wheel, but thats easy to clean.

Little and often for lube and clean the chain every now and again.

Scotoilers really do work, and they are easy to live with.

If you're using spray lube, it helps to have a bit of cardboard between the chain and the wheel... that way you don't lube your rear tyre. :D

If you don't have an automatic oiler,I reckon it does'nt matter much what you lube the chain with as long as you do it often.The principle is that the O rings on each link should not be allowed to run dry as they then fail and let the grease out of the links.Chain then wears quickly.

I just use old engine oil. Application is use dependent. If it is wet, then you need to do it more often.

I used to have a scotoiler and they are great. But it isn't that much hassle to apply oil regularly. Engine oil is recommended lube in the handbook, if you use used stuff like I do, there is an endless* FREE supply too!! :)

If you do big daily millage then a scotoiler is the only way to go ...

*By the time you have used the old lot it is time to dump some more ;)

I find the bit of card you remove from the top of a 24x330ml box of Stella ideal for this purpose.

I quite like Profi Dry Lube, quick squirt every 200 miles. Only the slightest bit of stretch (sic) in 8000 mile/18months.

Really must get round to getting a Scottoiler myself.

engine oil here to but from car not bike tends to be not as runny

6000 miles on new chain not had to adjust yet
old chain died after 4500 miles due to grinding paste action of sticky spray lube and road grit
