cheap sat nav for bike / car
 

Got a budget of approx 130 quid
Have looked through internet , can get a acer N35 pda with Sat nav for 129 , however it is a old piece of kit .
Also Garmin I3 sat nav @ 129

Obviously both are not water proof , therefore was going to put in tank bang , any one used either bits of kit ?

Any recommendations appreciated as first sat nav user

You can get them at asda for £100. 8) Had a wee shotty of my mates and seemed good enough. He just sticks it in the clear bit of the tank bag, and uses it in the car too

Now I would never suggest that you find a pda and search on the internet for a cracked tomtom 6 source as it would be illegal to do that.

If you do want to buy a copy of tomtom6 you would require at least a 512Mb card on which to install it

Yep I work in IT enough said re software.

I really would prefer the PDA , however worried about getting damaged on bike , I would have to wire up to bikes power supply & keep it water proof .

Where as if I get a cheap Garmin , they run on rechargable batteries & I can just stick in my tank bag & keep a couple of spare batteries.

Really would like the flexability of the PDA , but unsure regarding what would be needed to make PDA water proof / bar mounted / powered to bike .... & the costs , as I'm on a budget

Guess it would add up , any PDA users on sv's got any advice re above ?

right. for 130 you wont get much for your cash. the i3 is not a very good unit. i sell sat navs for a living, and the amount we got back was rediculous. and garmin, (who are based in romsy hampshire) just swap the unit straight over if there is a fault as they dont really bother fixing them. navman...not much for 130. but if you pop into halfords, they are selling he navman f20 which is a good little unit. comes with speed cameras pre installed as well. but you will have to go £20 over your budget. and might have to order it for later on in the week as we sold about 20 of them today, and i think it is the same through out the country. offer ends on monday though. as for older units....be carefull when it comes to pda's becasue some cheaper ones use slow processors and cant really run the software well enough and also you might need a gps antenna.
you would be btter off going for more of a thinner unit, something like the garmin nuvi range, but you are looking at about 250 plus in stores, but im sure online you coul pick one up for about 150.

Tomtom are doing the Tomtom Rider for £249 on their website ( www.tomtom.com ) That comes with a free car mounting kit. I've got one and its ace. You may be able to gat it cheaper from www.totalpda.com

I have a Imate kjam = O2 XDA,
It works a treat on the bike, Fixed a regular phone holder to the bike and it just slots in. No wires nothing.
Sat nav is cool and all instructions come through the blue tooth head set. Plus as a bonus the XDA answers calls itself after 3 rings so you can talk and ride 8)
Got mine on o2 it cost £25.00 for the XDA and costs 22.50 per mth with 200 mins, 200 texts and 5mb surfing time.

How easy was that to mount to the bike, is it a custom bracket or supplied? And whats the software like, is it updateable and how accurate is it? Finally whats it like as a phone?

Sorry for all the questions but I've been wanting something like this for a while!

As a phone and device it is bloody great, i have a had blackberrys etc but this is the dogs, As far as the software goes its very updatable mine updates every time its connected to my pc which is daily. As for a bracket I custom made it :lol:

IE Sticky Velcro :lol:

Staid on at over 110mph (allegedly) and with either back or front wheel off the ground :oops: 8)
