Backfiring

Bit of an engine novice !
Bike backfires when started after two days of no-use. Is this anything to worry about ? I use it every day during the week and it is fine every morning other than if not used over the weekend.
One other thing, last had bike serviced at 7,500 miles, when would next service be due ? and how ofter should my oil be topped up ?

Cheers

Hi mate

7.5k you say? Definetely needs a service then. At the least a minor service, depends what was done on the last service. Oil should be changed by the book ever 4k but some people do it every 2k. Oil, well, check it every few rides and see if it needs topping up.

The sv has servicing intervals at 4k I believe.

Newever SV's have a period more like 3.5k miles, so the next would be 10500miles. I think it stays at 3.5k after 7,500, but I'll have to check. I've just had my 7,500 service done too.

About the backfire, I *suspect* this could be fuel in the exhaust, which is more accurately refered to as an "afterfire". Exhaust gets hot, fuel in the exhaust catches fire.

This is your most probably cause, given that it takes 2 days of not using for it to happen. How it's getting there, is another matter, and someone more knowledable will be along shortly (they usually are).

cheers for the feedback

the only problem with checking the oil is that i have lower fairing and my sight glass for the oil is pretty much impossible to read (mucky etc) - any other ways of checking bar removing the lower panel ?

IIRC, take the cap off where the oil goes in, there's a little dip stick attached to it. This obviously assumes your lowers don't cover this cap too!
