Security idea + others welcome
 

Just bought an almax chain (the undefeatable type so far) but am aware how easy it is to remove wheels, a tooled up scumbag will do it in a couple of minutes and there's only a few sizes of spindle tools too so not much to be carrying around. There's not really a place to loop through the frame with a big chain either.

I'm thinking of designing/making a locking plug to go in the hex socket on the front wheel. Anything that slows down robbery has got to be a good thing. Are there any products like that about? Alternatively, even filling it with clear silicone would be another obstacle which could be cut out at tyre changes etc.

You got any ideas too?

Locking nuts have been used by people like Ford for a long time. I almost had to buy a new set when I needed to change the tyre on my Galaxy, but luckily found it in the car after a long search!

Good idea though, not sure of anyone doing it for bikes.

Is there space through the swingarm loop?

It would be far easier and cheaper to get a small U lock (the Oxford Boss disk lock is good for this) and use it to attach the chain to the frame.

It will be a tight fit - the Almax chain and SV frame might even be too big for the Oxford Boss (I use my Boss with a cheaper Oxford chain), but if it does fit then that is about the best you can get - the weak link is then the chain which is unavoidable.

even with locking nuts someone prepared will get at it. You can buy the adaptors over ebay. What a stupid thing for the manufacturers to do! If you've got nothing to chain it too, then you can loop the chain over the seat- stops and croppers being used and it stop wheel being removed

arenalife, I like your thinking. It just has to be unusual enough so that the thief isn't expecting it, and will hopefully go away. The ones on cars usually aren't much good because a few hits with a cold chisel and a fbh get them off in seconds.

Nope, the swingarm is a big A shape. there's a "loop" at the front behind the swingarm axle, which the shock and and rear downpipe pass through... The spar behind it has the wingarm linkage on the underneath.

had this idea given to me by a mate and i think its great, all you need is a red led and a small circuit to make it flash, mount led on the dash and hey presto, your bike looks like its got an alarm...

wont stop anyone but will make them think about an easyer steal

Halfords sell flashing LED kits that have the hardware integrated for a few quid...
