Stainless steel exhaust studs??
 

Would there be any cons to making the exhaust studs out of stainless steel??

I'm just fed up with fighting the rusty threads whenever i need to remove my exhaust :roll:

Just use allen bolts, i found mine kept falling out with the vibes though, rictus said that because i had some exhaust sealant, to put some of that around the threads and it would stay in, well over a month later is still ok.

It is 25 years since I last studied metallurgy so my knowledge may well be out of date

Stainless steel is brittle when compared to normal low carbon steels and probably wont survive as well in areas prone to vibration such as exhaust studs.

I have been having a quick read of the properties of stainless steels. I ain't going to go all mega geeky and start talking metallurgical phases of the different grades and properties thereof. Suffice to say you have to be aware of stress corrosion cracking in the more popular grades of stainless steel and that probably want a "Superaustenitic" material.

Now go to your local fastener stockists and ask and you will be told we only have A2 or A4 grade. So go for an A4 as the higher Molybdenum content should help resist the stress corrosion.

Failing that just use some copper grease on the studs and nut swhen you re-assemble and viola
