60 or 70 Section??

Ok, talking front tyre sections here ...

The standard for the SV is a 60 section i.e. 120/60 17.

A lot of race/track bikes run a 70 section.

- Who has tried the 70 section on the road?
- Why did you do it and what differences did you notice??
- Did you find it better or worse???
- If you haven't got one, have you thought about buying a 70?
- Have you had one, not liked it and gone back to 60?

I ask this as I have just changed my front tyre on my road bike and I think what I have on there now is a definite improvement.

The michelin race I had were a 70 section. To be honest the compound was a much bigger influence on the handling!

Front looked weird when they put the 60 section replacement on. So much so I asked if they hadn't got the wrong tyre on!

120/70 here, but mainly to recover height lost with the front end swap so I can't really give much of an opinion on which is better...

I've got both - I've got 120/60 bt-14's on one set of wheels & 120/70 supercorsa's on the other set. I've only ever ridden the bt-14's (60-section) on the road, but I definitely prefer the supercorsa's on the track, although this is obviously not an apples-apples comparison, I daresay I'd prefer 60-section supercorsa's to 70-section bt-14's just because of the compound, etc. so go figure :?

did you find a discarded-tyre pile at a track that offers different sizes? ;-)

If you like to buy used race rubber, as I do, then there is much greater choice in 70 section.

Its actually race rubber I took off (70 section Supercorsa) ... never have liked the way it felt at slow speed (you end up having to pull hard on the bars to stop it 'dropping in', its horrid) ... I have put a 60 section 020 on there and the bike is so much nicer to ride :)

Always used 70 profile on my SV's mainly because there is hardly any race rubber that comes in a 60 profile.

Not noticed any difference and the slow speed slower drop was minimal..i just rode faster:D

Did you lengthen your GSXR forks? Reason I ask is that they're shorter than standard, so with a 70 you'd still be lower at the front than stock :) (obviously wouldn't have applied to your minitwin...) Just curious.

Blue, if the extra 10mm or so front ride height bothers you, you could just make it go away... You can lower the front by more than that without risking clashing issues. Unless you have already :)

It’s not so much the geometry change, (if anything that would make the steering lazier/nicer for bumbling around on a commute through town ;)) it’s the aggressiveness of the profile meaning the front wants to fold in at every given opportunity.

Chunky and SV650Racer, I am talking road bikes here. The two are used under such different circumstances you cannot make a comparison, a trackbike is never going to be doing a 90deg turn into a little side road at 10mph … its never going to be going round a roundabout behind a lorry/bus/car doing 15mph …
