Breather pipe?
 

Hi Just had my valve clearances checked by a 'mechanic' and when I got back home i noticed the breather pipe that goes to the front cylinder from the airbox had come off on my pointy.

Does anyone know if this could of damaged the engine? Also what does it do?:confused:

Interesting,

A couple of weeks ago, when I was thinking about getting the SV serviced, I noticed some oil over the gear lever side of the engine.

Anyway, when I got the bike back, the mechanic said he had found the source of the leak - which thankfully he said turned out to be the breather pipe from the top of the engine casing up into the airbox rather than a gasket or anything more serious.

The breather pipe is just that, it allows the oil in the engine to breath clean air from the airbox - I presume to allow the pressure difference to equalise when the engine is cold or warm.

No harm done, as without the pipe, the oil just expanded up over the engine top and down the side of the engine. The mechanic just stuck it back in place.

Yep, it shouldn't cause any problems- it's mainly a blow not a suck :) It could spit oil but it's very unlikely to allow contamination in. Just reconnect it and forget about it (until your next service anyway!) It's very easy for them to come loose in refitting the airbox.

as has been said already just pop it back onto your airbox and dont worry about it.


Its purpose is to let vapours from the crankcase go back into the airbox so it can be burned in the combustion process. Its all to do with keeping the bike cleaner and greener older bikes used to just vent to atmosphere anyway so no harm will have been done to your bike apart maybe a splash of oil vapour from where the pipe has been venting too.
