abba stand and forks
 

I'm buying an abba stand so I can work on the forks but the website says I have to use my own jack or their front lift to get to the forks.

Their front lift is a bit expensive and seems kinda cheap. Just wondering if it's worth getting. If not, what should I use to lift the front end, just a regular jack? Or are there special stands for that.

We just used a jack placed carefully under the engine.............avoiding the oil filter:D

A lot of front lifts require the forks to be in place anyway.

Just a regular jack would do you fine, tbh, I'd do mine with a simple axel jack in the middle of the engine block, but others would probably slate me for even saying that.

Another option, strap the pillion seat to the floor tightly if you can ;) The abba stand is in the middle of the bike, pull the back wheel down, and the front lifts. Simple physics really (but not ignoring friction ;) )

A further option still, some bricks, or blocks of wood. Small child if you have one laying around... there won't be much weight there, most of it taken by the abba.

Doesn't work so well as the SV's centre of balance is so far back- lift directly under the middle of the engine, and you tend to take too much weight off the stand as well- I've had my Abba standing on one corner, and the bike lift off a paddock stand so it was just balancing by one hook and the jack :smt100

So, what I do is I use my £3.99 barrel jack and a couple of bricks, and I lift it from under the front head, just by the exhaust. Works brilliantly, miles more stable. had the front wheel out with the bike on a paddock stand at the weekend (since I've never picked my Abba stand up from the last lend it was on)

Did my forks with it on a paddock stand and trolley jack under engine block. Not too stable, but you can get the wheel out before it lifts off the paddock stand. Was ok, but don't be braying on any nuts while in that state....

I just came across it while doin some more searching. The abba dealer quoted me 230 USD for the stand and I have to drive a few hours north to canada to pick it up. I'd still probably do it if it were worth it but I came across that lift and it seems like a solid alternative.

Edit: just read some reviews and they're all saying it failed on them.. bah!

Hmm, don't fancy that much- it'd be great for dirtbikes and cruisers with flat bottoms, but SVs don't have good jacking points. That's assuming it doesn't break :)

I have the abba front lifter as we got it thrown in at a show cheap, and its only simple. If you have a garage you could try hanging the front of the rafters with a leaver straps.
