Holidays: Anyone done...
...a very last minute holiday? Sort of turn up at the travel agents and say 'what you got leaving this afternoon' type thing?
How was it, where did you go etc, was it cheap? |
Re: Holidays: Anyone done...
Mate, went to Fuertaventura in Feb (half term as my wife is a teacher). Bought it on Saturday afternoon and went on Sunday morning. Named accommodation. Was a bit worried but it was great. Fab holiday for a reasonable price. I have never done it before as we usually go skiing in Feb but due to the snow conditions we waited and waited and still no snow. So decided to go for a sun break instead.

Re: Holidays: Anyone done...
I didn't even go to the travel agents.
Work told me I had to take 3 weeks holiday by the end of the year at the beginning of December a few years ago. Booked a flight from flight center, arrived in Australia 7days later. Booked into a hostel online, and all was sorted for the first day. Then I had time to sort the rest out once I was there. Slightly different - traveling for work i've never had any trouble booking flights a day or less before to get somewhere. Good luck, and enjoy it! P.S Just make sure you have your passport and it's valid! Dan |
Re: Holidays: Anyone done...
Yes, I did a package holiday for 2 last minute on Ceefax a few years back. It was dirt cheap. £200 each and that was flights to Menorca, transport to and from the airport and half board in a 3 star hotel for a week.
If you're not fussy about where you go (IE you just want somewhere reasonably safe, hot, with beaches/a pool) it's easily done. |
Re: Holidays: Anyone done...
Haven't done it for a few years now, but I used to just turn up at Heathrow or Gatwick & go from airline desk to airline desk asking what they had leaving in the next couple of hours & at what price.
Usually, the later Ii was prepared to leave it (with the risk of course that the seats would be sold) the cheaper it became. I don't think I ever paid more than about £60 for any flight within Europe (scheduled flights not charters). Obviously I had to sort out accomodation at the other end - but that was never a problem. |
Re: Holidays: Anyone done...
Last year we got a cheap trip to Rhodes by booking 2 weeks before, we checked the website (Olympus holidays) a few days before the trip to see if we would have got it even cheaper then and they were sold out.
10 years back I got an even cheaper trip to Mallorca by going in to a travel agent Friday and buying a holiday that left the next day, hotel allocated to you when we arrived, we got very lucky and stayed in a beautiful place. But that was before t'internet so maybe not available now. The best bit was being able to say "I want to be on a beach tomorrow, what have you got?" :) |
Re: Holidays: Anyone done...
I haven't yet, but I will be doing.
My intention is to go to Manchester Airport. "When's the next flight leaving for.........?" Sort out accomodation when I get there. Nothing like being spontaneous :) |
Re: Holidays: Anyone done...
Went to Cyprus last year and booked three days before.Ended up in a lovely 4 star place near Pafos with B&B.Seen the same holiday this year for twice what we paid.:)

Re: Holidays: Anyone done...
i almost did. I had flights already paid for, so would just turn up, say can i leave on the next one then arrive somewhere with no accommodation. That was never a problem though. Would just always speak to some people outside, share a cab with them, and stay where they were. I remember paying 20% of the price at a 4* hotel by just turning up!

Re: Holidays: Anyone done...
bargain holidays on web are good. you can say what airport and date. mum a nd dad did it for week from glasgow to brussels for £70 each. stayed in 5 star hotel. i went to gran canaria a few years ago but as i was taking kids i had more stipulations ie kids club etc. if you just give dates a nd airport im sure you will get a bargain
