What would you pay for this?(R reg Transalp)

The bloke over the road has an R reg Transalp that's been sitting there rotting for the last year or so and I'd like to buy it off him for something to tinker with and get this missus on the back of. I'd get her on the SV but I'd prefer to have a top box on for her support and I'm not putting ANY ugly bracketry on my baby.

I'm assuming it has no tax, no mot, the battery's knackered and it has no screen. I'd have thought the chain would need replacing too and it'd generally need a good going over. Anyone had any experience with these? I have heard the thing to check would be the spokes on the wheels as they go rusty and pull out of the rim.

Parker's guide says £990. What do you think I should pay for it? I thought I'd approach him with £600.

It's a Honda - as soon as you've charged the battery it'll be good to go!

£600 sounds about right so approach him with £300. He might bite your hand off just to see the back of it, I mean it's a Honda...

Anyone else? I'm a bit worried about insulting him. I reckon he's waiting to part ex it. In that case are the book prices usually kept too and would the no tax and mot decrease this price?

I'll make a list(with prices) of the stuff that'll need or most probably need replacing/serviced. Then take that away from the book price bearing in mind the pre-rotting away condition.
Take the total of what is on your list from the book price and maybe a lil bit for anything you might have missed. That way you are presenting a concrete arguement regards why you have offered X amount.

Dealers are not stupid so even if he got offered £800, they'll probably make it up on the price of the new bike.
Bottom line is, it's your money and you don't exactly want to be the one subsidising someones new bike, or end up with one of those "looks an easy fix" but turns out "Not" . Yes.. I know it's a Honda

I'd start £500 (sounds a bit less of a mick take than £300) and then go to £600 if he says no.

As others have said, one way or another, he won't get list price when part-exing it (IE they'll add the £300 or so onto the bike by charging rrp for the new bike/giving less of a discount on them).

Quite right.

Topboxes are thing of beauty and deserve a bike upon which they stand out.
