This is sad. Its a difficult one because you have to sympathize with her, she is human, and an addict, like other addicts in the world.

The amount of cash going into helping people give up smoking for example. But she doesnt seem to be trying to help herself, she lost a lot of weight in 2003, and banged it all (in fact more) back on. I know people who have had operations refused because they are overweight, and it has FORCED them to control themselves, but it can't be easy.

Ironic that her husband is a chef!

Also, it reminds a little of the George Best story, he had a dead person's liver, and STILL continued to drink.... that is a very strong addiction, and if I were another patient waiting for a transplant I would want to throttle him. If she can't control her eating now who's to say she will AFTER the op?

They are not saying no we won't help you they are saying you need to start helping yourself first so we can do the rest.

It doesn't say how long she was in clinic for but at that cost and showing that she can loose that much weight most people should be able to carry on the last few stones themselves before the OP.
If you can't do it now, then how can they be sure that after the expensive, dangerous, and time consuming surgery and post op therapy you won't just pile it back on again.

They put these conditions on all addicts, you have to show you can help yourself and stay "cured" after they help you, before they spend public money and resources (which are both strained despite record freaking tax) on you.

Sympathy, yes, but she's got an offer for help, she just needs to loose 12 stones, and she has all the incentive in the world to do it.

Humm, my gut reaction is the same. But, what if a child of yours gets in a wrong crowd and becomes a crack addict, will you tell him not to go to the nhs because its his own fault and you don't want them wasting funds on him? Addiction is addiction, and that is the core of this. Addiction comes from psycological weakness, and transforms itself in whatever form, drugs, food, alcohol.

I also want to say fat cow, get a grip, don't waste the money, but I just think it is not as simple as that unfortunately.

I don't know, being forced to go to the gym in that condition will probably be degrading and humiliating thus violating her human rights and opening the way for a law suit.

She cant move from the chair let alone go to the gym!:mad::mad::mad:

Aparently any exertion could cause her major problems now.

Husband says he loves her and yet continues to feed her. He's partly to blame, too.
