I think I have made a big mistake

Well today I finally managed to track down my boss and have a serious word. I have told him I am fed up of the rubbish work I have been getting lately and want a decent job to get my teeth into.

So we went through my current workload and my end of life projects and he then asked what I was doing for Rob our European technology director. To which I replied nothing at present that is why I want something to do.

At which point he explained he didn't realise I had so little to do and would I be interested in.

Scoping a new time & attendance system for one of our principle customers, Development of an invitation to tender, Tender analysis and supplier selection, Technical project management of solution and rollout to their european factories. Development of interface into factory scheduling tools, project finance and payroll tools etc. The customer has apparently budgeted about £300,000 for this. OK project management is my bread and butter. IT integration I wrote the book. But T&A, Finance/payroll I know sod all about and will be reliant upon others.

Err have I bitten off more than I can chew and am I going to loose my afternoon ride outs by having to work for a change.

Err boss, can I go back to twiddling my thumbs and waiting for the next problem that only Tim can solve.

oh dear, serves you right for wanting to feel valued. Have you not realised yet that WE don't want to earn our money, we just want to be paid!

You should have kept quiet and chatted on the forum .... like the rest of us ;)

Well the £300,000 in wages should take the edge off a bit surely?

You are quite right about the "wanting to feel valued" bit. Thats why I went looking for work instead of letting it find me. Normally I get called in when things have hit the fan and there is a technically complicated problem to resolve. It will be nice to make my own ****ups instead of fixing somebody elses.

Yup I'd agree with that.

I have no problem being the one getting the rollocking's for doing sweet FA. Sooner or later something gets fubar'd.

Just recently had a pay review, managed to shirk some work off, and get a pay rise. So I can't be doing that badly.

I do wonder how I get away with at times. But in fairness, I think I am just super efficient, get things done faster and better then everyone else, and hence earn both the cash, and the forum time ;)

I used to say that I got paid for what I can do, rather than what I actually do. A few times I have had to prove it. Since I have gone through 8 redundancy exercises unscathed in the past 20 years I must be doing something right.

Besides with the crap salaries we pay. Doing nothing is about the right amount of work for the rate.
