I love my job (again)

Six months ago ish (the last time the clocks changed anyway), one of our clients had a major issue with timestamps. The application worked it out completely wrong, and refused to process anything for around an hour. Not nice.

At the time, I was working in Support, and it was me that looked into it. Whilst looking into it, I found out about what the American's were planning to do with timezone stuff, and flagged this up with others in my company, and even in the client company (to tell the client that this is what was happening, we know about it, we're planning to counter it's effects etc). Turns out the client didn't have a clue about it, and actually use CST/CDT, so it would affect their operations; and they were very grateful for me being on the ball.

Just now I've had a phone conversation with another developer here...

"Hi dave, I'm looking at issue abcdef, can you shed any light on it?"

Hmm, erm, that was 6 months ago! Tell me the problem, not a number generated by the work app, it might mean something to me!

The long & the short of it, the problem I flagged up, along with the original issue, are only now being worked on.

Short sighted or what? Guess who will have to pick up the pieces if it's not implimented correctly on time? Hmm.

Sorry, carry on folks :)

we've had a big fuss in my company about this - right about now all the patches are being released to fix this!

i'm pretty sure i read that this change has been known about for about 2 years, too...which makes it even more stupid (and hence even more expected!)

I'm on call this weekend for the change to American DST too. Bloody Java causing all the problems for us. My beloved mainframe takes it all it's stride, it's this new fangled rubbish giving us gip! :)

Nothing wrong with Java in itself Mike ;) It's Sun's creation of it that really poorly impliments a lot of things. Date/Time being one of those.

Have fun this weekend. The sun is out, so I'm going to go back down to the A470 & see if I can find that CBR guy I just lost :D
