The stuff inside an exhaust...
 

I recently had to refit the rubber seal around the end of my Micron can. On taking the end off I could see what appeared to be loft insulation all around the inside of my exhaust.

Firstly, does this stuff;

a) Insulate from heat
b) Insulate from sound
c) Both

Secondly, if it does insulate from sound, is it possible to make the exhaust incrementally louder by removing layers, or will it be an all or nothing job?

You can see where I'm going with this... :D

It does a bit of both really, you periodically need to repack a lot of cans as the do get louder as the packing burns off.

So yeah you could in principal make it louder by removing a bit - I wouldn't though.

Some can materials, I'm thinking of carbon at least, don't like the extra heat if the packing burns off/is removed and generally bugger up the outer sleeve.

Worth a look in the exhaust section.

i was told by my local HG store that you can use loft insulation, and yes the less packing the more noise! i want to quiet mine down,

Thanks guys. Where is the exhaust section then? I cannot find it in the site index! Maybe I will phone Micron and ask what they think.

Thanks Sarah, I could not find anything regarding the insulation material, and my, may I just say what a smashing healthy wet nose you have.

Mr ZZR; I bought my Micron in with my bike from new. The can was £200 (for a stainless steel one, carbon fibre was £280), and they didn't charge me for fitting it. You'll no doubt be pleased to hear, from what others have said, that the Micron can is very, very shiny, and comes up lovely with a polish!
