SV650.org - SV650 & Gladius 650 Forum - Repair to RHS peg

Well, I got hold of a complete RHS peg and brake lever assembly to replace my slightly damaged one. It was off a K4 apparently - the mounting plate had sublte differences so it was a simple job of removing the peg and brake lever from the mount and doing a straight swop - hardest bit was removing the split pin that holds the brake mechanism linkage - if you see what I mean. Time taken? About half an hour. I had to adjust the light switch thingy a bit aswell.

But due to the damage, I hadn't been using the rear brake much so it was getting sticky. Undo 2 bolts to remove caliper. Fanny around to draw it past the exhaust for a good butchers...new pads to hand and new stainless steel bolts. With the caliper in my left hand, I removed the grub screw that conceals the hex head of the brake pad locking pin/screw. Removed the pin/screw. Cleaned up the exposed piston with a jockbrite and some of that deadly poisonous stuff in a can (correct ppe should be worn folks - me? Couldn't be @rsed - I like to actually feel what I'm manipulating!!). The crud came off dead easy. Inserted new pads and tightened pin'screw. Undid the bleed nipple and pressed the pads back onto the piston to push it back into the caliper. Tightened bleed nipple. Attached caliper back onto mount and tightened all around remembering to replace the grub screw. Then spent half an hour of open nipple - push pedal down and hold - shut nipple - release pedal...ensuring brake fluid was kept topped up. My top tip here is not be scared when you push that pedal, you're trying to pump out a bubble of air that is reluctant to budge so push that sucker!! Mind you don't get the fluid in your eyes tho', or anywhere else. Started the job just before 2pm, wandered down to the nippers school at half three with nice clean washed hands and a grin knowing that I had sorted out a couple issues on the machine that would have cost a sizeable wedge if done at a bike shop place.
