Illegal to own an uninsured car?

Sounds like a good idea at first doesn't it (it's just been on the news).

However.

We actually own (well, she does) a Hyundai Pony GSX, which has been parked for about a year on private land. It's also been SORN'd, and can you guess, we haven't been paying insurance for it (because it hasn't moved in more than a year!).

So, under the proposed laws, the Hyundai could be taken off us & scrapped by Plod.

Why is the Hyundai there? It's sat waiting for me to have the time to fix the big easy stuff, then get it MOT'd & tax'd so that it can be sold & make a little money from it. But if the ne proposal is made law, we won't be able to do that (unless we do it quickly).

Yet another politician with an ill thought out idea!

I've not seen the story but I bet you a pound it doesn't become law, the implications are too far reaching- race cars, classics, restos, show cars, kit cars that are always in bits... And then add in bikes as well, since it'd probably affect us too. And it probably wouldn't achieve anything, since driving them's already illegal.

If it did by some freak chance become law, then I'll attempt to reclaim my bound by betting you that parked-up insurance quickly becomes available for a nominal fee- insurance policies that don't allow driving on a public road. This'd actually be potentially a good thing, since at the moment it's difficult to insure a SORNed vehicle, or worse, one you don't have a licence for- there's a guy down the road that's got a Samba bus in mint condition that's probably worth £10000, but he lost his licence last year and his wife doesn't drive- so he's parked it for the next year and SORNed it, but he had a terrible time insuring it against fire and theft. I was in thesame boat when I bought the SV, it was 3 monhts before i did my test.

As a side note you can get Storage Insurance, which is what it says. Nothing to do with Road Traffic Act but simply to cover the value of the vehicle while in storage,so how the hell are they going to impliment an act that has so many loopeholes. i.e. any goods in our warehouse are insured for a minimum value by us and it is up to the customer to increase the premium for max value if required
Just another half-****ed idea by a brainless moron

The only thing that slightly concerns me about our car, is fire risk.

It has 3 flat tyres (one done on purpose by me), so it's going nowhere. No "respectable" theif would want a car with 3 flats!

Provided the battery is disconnected and the fuel removed it is no more a fire risk than anything else

Done & done (and fuel in the tank will now need draining & disposing of).

Still doesn't stop some scrote breaking a window & setting fire to the seats though. :(

Unfortunately the same can be said about your house, garage or shed

If I had of known the garage had seats, it would of had a fridge fitted by now too!

Seriously though, that's the only thing I'd want to insure the Hyundai for, the risk of someone setting fire to it.

Sounds like another dose of overkill to me.You already need insurance to tax a car.If a car is not taxed it must legally be SORNed.If it is SORNed it cannot legally be on the road,so it does not need to be insured. What is the problem here that these tossers feel the need to legislate about?

Re: Illegal to own an uninsured car?

Would be a problem for me. Our bike is kept in the house and the door and gate are very narrow with less than 3ft between them! (old victorian workmans terrace), so if a car then parks across the line of exit we're bu**ered. So the solution is to buy an old banger, put a years road tax on it and push it out of the way when we wish to get the bike in or out. Obviously the car is not insured excepting to get the road tax.
