Odd Noise

Just had bike serviced (oil, Valves) and am noticing a noise I haven't noticed before.

Sort of raspy whistle noticeable when the engine is under load with small throttle openings around 4k.... It's definitely caused by cracking the throttle open slightly. Don't hear it if I wind it up or when pulling away in low gear (Although maybe it's getting drowned out in the general roar)

Any thoughts? Induction noise? Fuel injectors... oil level is a bit high but it's only in there to give the engine a bit of a clean and is coming out next week...

Vague enough?

I'll probably run it back to the garage and ask (although they're all a bit deaf!) but thought I'd pick your collective brains first...

Induction noise caused by a cleaner air filter? Snorkel out or in?

I'm told the scorpion makes a whistle if you don't put a bolt in the hole that the baffle came out of... can't say I've noticed it personally.

"Induction noise caused by a cleaner air filter?"

Did occur.... Noise is somewhere towards the front - Chances are air filter was as foul as the oil.....

OK excuse ignorace.... Snorkel?

(seem to recal my Bros TL whistled a bit but it's a while since I rode it and could be wishful thinking...)

Think of a snorkel that you'd use whilst swimming. Turn it upside down (so you're trying to suck air from down by your feet - not a good idea when under water). Attach it to the front of the airbox on your bike, bingo, that's what the SV snorkel does.

Basically a way of feeding air into the airbox but not letting water get in (unless you happen to ride your bike in space).

A common mod is to remove it (or replace it with a SV1000 snorkel as these are bigger). I've removed mine, and the change in induction noise is amazing.

Ok...general consesus is it's a combination of the injectors & air filter both of which have been degunked.....

Drop the oil again on Sat, repace the filter, fill it up (less!) with decent stuff & Bob's yer mothers Brother....

I think of it as a kind of fluttering noise. I use to have it my SV and my CBR does it too, I think it's the fuel injectors as my carbed Aprilia didn't do it.

If any noises ever worry you on the bike just stick some earplugs in. If you can't hear it with plugs in it isn't worth bothering about.

Well I just picked up my blue '02 curvey and low and behold I heard the same sort of sound in the same sort of conditions.

If it's the same it's sort of a light chirpy flutter not being an expert on SV's yet it does sound like induction and I'm not worried at all.

I swear I hear some sort of 'whirring' noise on my 24k '01 curvy while riding at lower speeds. Was worried that it might have been the cam chains or something at first. It also sounds like a kind of 'metallic ringing' when the bike is parked up and you put your ear next to the front block. Suppose it's just a noise that a twin makes I guess!

I wouldn't worry about it. My 06 SV and my missus' 99 SV both sound like a bag of spanners when running. Both are well maintained and have sub 20K mileages and run perfectly well.
V-twins are noisy beggars at the best of times.

So there.

Mine does it to, you'll hear it with all v-twins .. listen to a Honda Firestorm they do it loudly at idle. V4 engines whine even more.
