Garmin I3

i had this unit on my old Yamaha xj600 had it mounted on the handlebars using a modified front headlight light that you would put onto a mountain bike. However i now have a curvy sv650s and was wondering where i can mount it i have tried searching but cant find the exact instructions( probably just me being stupid tho:(). N.B as for the waterproofing i found the best solution was using a condom as the screen is a lot clearer and you can still use the scroll wheel. (Obviously a new condom and wash all the lube etc off it!!!)
Any help, with pics preferably on mounting locations would be great thank you.

Glad you've raised this - pardon the pun. I was looking at an i3 as they have a stonking reputation and are a great size for the SV. Dont really want a 50" plasma mounted on my bars. Anyway - the point I'm making is that to date the only reason I haven't bothered is simply because I cant find (or can be bothered to fabricate) a suitable mounting bracket - any ideas anyone ?

Although I can only talk about mounting the Tomtom Rider, rather than the Garmin, I found that the standard mount worked okay, provided I moved the switchgear and brake lever a bit to free up space and also hacksawed the standard mount down to size. After doing this (as is usually the way) I came across some very nice 3rd party mounts made specifically for mounting GPS/radio/mp3 player, on a bike's handle bars. The part that actually clamped onto the bars was very thin, as was the stem connecting this to the main bit of the mount, so I think you could probably use them "as is", rather than having to thin them down/move your switchgear.

Someone on here mentioned a brand of mounts that were supposed to be good (bit pricey though) designed for use in aviation.

I used to make and sell motorbike/bicycle mounts for the i3; no more proper mounts left now but I might be able to dig out enough odd bits to knock one last one up? It'll go straight on a pointy but needs a washer to fit to a curvy. The only other manufacturer I know of that can do anything for the i3 is www.ram-mount.com

I got another sucker mount for a car windscreen and put a bolt through it onto my dark DB screen. I prefer to be able to see the screen from time to time. I took power via the side lights, using a 7805 chip to provide the 5v required. Works well :-)

Any chance of a pic of the mounting thanks

OK got garmin fitted now, i didnt want to modify the bike so what i did was using a bit of metal that i had left over from the tail tidy mod cut out a square just bigger than the garmin suction cup mount then i screwed the suction mount to this bit of metal put some hard rubber on the bottom of the plate to avoid scratches then cable tied it to the top yoke:

Cable ties is just an interim solution looking to get some heavy duty Velcro ties but with cable ties does not move a tiny bit of wiggling but very solid.

Here is how I did mine :-) Note I also added a small wire cable in case it would come off at a any time.

and the mounting itself. Done on the flatest part of my DB screen.
