fiberglass howto?
 

after trashing more fairing panels last weekend I've decided that I should have a go at repairing them with fiberglass. any pointers on what I need to get & where I can get it from?

I'm definitely not looking for the greatest finish, just strength & durability

I repaired the indicator mounting on mine by soldering in cable ties, worked pretty well, but I've a feeling yours may be passed this stage!

You can get all the stuff you need in a kit. They sell them in most car shops.

Are they holed or just scraped? If it's scrapes, you don't want fibreglass, you want filler- like Isopon frinstance, that's what I use because it's what my grandad used and it reminds me of "helping" fix his Cortina :) But it does work well.

I want to put the front LHS fairing panel back together. the rear panel damage is old, I'm not bothered about that

Woo, you snapped the rearset peg off? Fairly big one then... Quite lucky it didn't take the frame lugs instead really, some rearsets are stronger than the frame :shaking: I was going to slate the R&Gs again but I think in this case they have an excuse...

You know how to plastic weld? S**t plastic weld I mean, not proper "Can't tell it was ever broken", just "in one piece". Some folks are artists with it, I just aim for it to not fall in half again. That's the way to go though- stronger, doesn't add weight, and not actually hard to do. All you need is a bit of spare fairing to use as the rod, and a cheap, reasonably powerful soldering iron, ideally with a wedge tip IMO. Just a case of melting the edges together

But if you do want to glass it, get a tub of the Isopon bridging compound, think it's P40? Comes in a tub with blue writing. It's a bit rubbish but it's easy to use. No need for matting or repair mesh if you have all the bits either.

Good Post :) Halfords is a good place to start. I repaired a broken indicator mount on my old GPz fairing. Do the glassing from the inside then use a bit of filler to cover the cracks on the outside, paint it up & no one will know. just make sure everything is in line to save embarrassment :)
