Chain Oiling

My bike has now done 400 miles and my partners dad is getting on at me to take it around his so he can check the oil on the chain/spray oil on it etc.

Iam a complete amature, how often should the chain be oiled, is it covered in the book i have only read half of before deciding to go out for a ride?

every time you fill the tank, some say.

i would (& did) invest in a scottoiler

Scottoiler is a good thing, but you should oil your chain every 100 miles if needed. Though in the winter you might need it more.

seriouslly :o that often...i was told to invest in a scotoiler but then told i probably wouldnt be riding often enough to warrant it.

I have done 400+ dry miles and there still appears to be plenty on it

Well it all depends on your riding and the weather, when I was doing 130 miles aday, the chain needed fequent lubing.

Don't go mental, its only the o-rings that need lubrication. Lot of people just spray it all over the chain and that ain't needed.

Wurth Dry Chain lube is good stuff, and 'RiDE' recomended, plus has minimal fling.

dry chain lube? is that like the wax stuff you can buy?

oil fling is a pain in the ****, spent 30 minutes with a piece of tissue dabbed with fairy liquid cleaning my rear wheel :(

Re: Chain Oiling

yep... just spray you back wheel lightly with WD40, its also a degreasant, then wipe with a old rag.

What he said, although I do not oil it every time I fill up or that would be every other day! Once a week is enough I find. I usually get 12'000 miles from a chain with some rather aggresive riding thrown in too. ;)
