Aluminium welding (SV foot peg)
I have a mate who has a MIG welder. He reckons I might be able to weld my front right rearset hanger back together again, if I buy some aluminium wire and Argon gas canister for it. Anyone done this, is it doable?

Re: Aluminium welding
its certainly possible - but difficult! - not really the machine designed for the job! Is he's an experienced welder go for it- got nothing to lose. Just make sure its not attached to the bike when you do it!

Re: Aluminium welding
Just as a note, it's not aluminium, it's aluminium alloy and a pig to weld right, as the part is load critical I'd be very careful.

Re: Aluminium welding (SV foot peg)
it will need to be TIG welded, what you have to be carefull of is when castings cool down after being welded they have a tendancy to crack on the area aroud the weld and this isnt always visible without proper testing(dye penetrant works best on castings) if you do get it welded make sure they know what they are doing, it will probably be cheaper to get on the phone to some breakers yards or on ebay, you can pick them up fairly cheap!

Re: Aluminium welding (SV foot peg)
agree with all above :) as i say - it is possible, but really does need a TIG weld. But as its unuseable anyway; probably worth a go. I'd rather just get some decent rearsets as a replacement

Re: Aluminium welding (SV foot peg)
It is possible to use a MIG on aluminium but this is a cast piece and really, it's not that expensive. Just get a replacement.

it is very hard to get a good weld with that metal i would also recomend just getting a new one
