Crash bungs.

I'm looking at getting some crash bungs in the not too distant future. Now I know there are two different sorts, Engine mounted and Frame mounted. Are there any advantages of one over the other?
The only stuff I've ever used is R&G's, but they are engine mounted aren't they, and the pic I saw the other day where someone crashed and the crashbung had really damaged the engine has slightly put me off them.

Damage I've seen from engine mounted bobbins.

http://www.loscrashprotection.com/ I think these are frame mounted rather than engine mounted.... I think.

Re: crash bungs...

Depending on what you're after really, the new design R&G's are attached threw a transfer plate and not directly threw the centre engine mount, designed to bend the bolt threw the bung.

But if you want the best protection then you'll need the impact triangle, this is multiple points of contact (three, but more never hurts), start with solid footpegs, crash bung at the front and one to the rear, the bike will hit on these and provided they are situated correctly then little or no other damage will occur (you can get barends as well).

My Triumph has one set behind the rad, one set above the middle of the engine, another set under the rear pod (obviously sticking out far enough to impact first) and solid Gilles rearsets, perhaps overkill but then you can be sure your repair bill will be small if the worse happens, it also spreads the load so none take the full impact so less chance of shearing mounts.

Of course all bets are off at any higher speeds :D

Cheers Mark.

Shin my furry firend, you have forgot to mention that your bike is one of those new fangled hornets ;)
A mate of mine had ones on his CBR13 and it cracked the engine casing in a low speed off!! So frame one if you can get them.

Ok, in that case, just buy the bungs and threw bolts, get yourself some alui stock and machine down a cross brace between a couple of mounting holes and affix that way replicating the latest R&G fitment, simple.;)
