Yes, drivers who sit in queues with their foot on the brake dazzle me with their brakelights. :smt013:smt076I always use my handbrake.

And while we're on the subject, the same kn*bheads ride their clutch when stopped on a hill instead of "handbrake on, gear lever into neutral". It wears your clutch & clutch release bearing, doesn't it?:rant:

So, what do you do? Are you a good boy like me,:thumbsup: or a footbrake/clutchriding kn*bhead? :driving:

i tend to use handbrake and into neutral to relax the legs. on the bike the other day i saw a guy doing a darn good yo-yo impression riding the clutch beside me on an uphill road at lights. idiot stalled when it went green! or maybe his clutch went:D

I don't use the car much these days, but it's handbrake & neutral when properly stopped when queueing for junction or lights etc. Neutral and brake when shuffling along in a jam. Depends how much it's moving.

I passed my car test years ago, and this is how I was taught. However, a while back someone told me that this is no longer the case, and new drivers are not instructed to use the handbrake when stopped like this. I haven't got any references for this though, and it seems a bit mad to me. Anyone here a driving instructor or taken lessons recently?

Im a driving instructor and teach that if you are waiting then use the handbrake but if its a pause then use the footbrake only

Wait = anything more than a few seconds, e.g at traffic lghts!

Riding the clutch is not advised ever but doesn't really wear the bearings much now as cars are so well made.

If my pupils are doing a hill start then they use the handbrake

Im usually a clutchriding knobhead on a hill but its not my car and im lazy!

I'm definately a neutral kinda guy when stopped, but I don't tend to put the handbrake on unless I need to. You can sit on quite a slope before you really need it. (Note I'm not using brake pedal either).

Sorry to buck the trend but I did a Prodrive driving day - part of it is a talk by a police driver. He said that statistically automatics are involved in fewer rear shunts at traffic lights, simply because they tend to sit with their foot on the brake. He advised us to do the same.

So now I put the handbrake on but still use the footbrake too - by order of the police :-)
