Track/race bike insurance
Hey,
I'm in the process of converting my bike into a track bike and I was wondering what other people do with regards to insurance. Obviously I won't be riding it on the road and any track spills are just part of it and won't/can't be claimed. I would however like some kind of cover against theft, but I guess that's it. So - to those with track/race bikes - Are they insured under a normal road policy, or are there other options with this? Thanks Luke |
Re: Track/race bike insurance
I've heard of people insuring them with their house insurance. There's a guy on Pistonheads who also converted his R6 to a track bike this year and I think that's what he's done.

How much is your road insurance? is if F&T or fully comp?
You would need to keep the bike MOT'd and taxed presumably for that to be valid, but that might be cheaper than track insurance? Basically if your road insurance is <£500 then keep it road insured TPF&T and daylight MOT it. There are insurance places that will insure your race/trackbike and all your gear against theft. I can't remember the name of the company that was recommended to me, but ask on here www.motoforum.net as that is where I got the info. Anyway, when I phoned up, I found the price pretty steep and they wanted a tracker fitted ... To be honest that is probably your best bet anyway ... i.e. get a tracker in it ... as soon as it goes missing, then call in and it can be tracked ... Oh and finally I figured that bearing in mind the cost of the theft insurance, coupled with the fact that when in use I have to accept I could throw it down the track - and write it off in an instant anyway, that I bowed down from coughing up to insure against theft ... Anyway, that was my logic, but you will want to get a quote and make your own decision ... so if no one comes up with some names to try here then put a post up on motoforum :) |

Re: Track/race bike insurance
I had my 250LC race bike insured on a separate race bike policy. IIRC it was something £80 per year. I though it was very reasonable. Can't remember the company name and no chance of finding the paperwork with the house in its current state!
It can be done for a reasonable amount. Have you tried asking any of the Minitwins lot what they do? |

It was about £600 when I inquired, and that was only for ~£4k of cover, can't remember if that was including or excluding the cost of a tracker mind?!?! |

Unfortunately I'm installing central heating and prepping for installing my new kitchen when it arrives tomorrow. You have to bear in mind my LC was only insured for <£1000, I am sure it was under £100 for the cover though. I'll have a thunk about it and see if I can remember who it might have been with. |

Re: Track/race bike insurance
i insured bike for one track day. it cost £65 thru pit and paddock. saying that did all other track days without insurance as £65 is a bit steep. plastics not covered. end can not covered. only covered if its written off. I would imagine more track day accidents are just cosmetic damage.
if i had come off i would have taken in a van and dropped it off a cliff somewhere lol |
