Road sign recognition

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6716417.stm

Scary that people can't recognise road signs. No wonder the roads are so dangerous.

I do like these suggestions for new ones though.

Wifi hotspot;
Healthy eating zone - indicating places where healthy food is on offer;
Drive-through approaching;
Up-to-date children-crossing signs - with the boy wearing a hoodie;
Beware of skateboarders.

:lol:

I'd be interested to know HOW the survey was done. Reading that report on it, it looks like it was a mix of methods, which will never bring back accurate results (ask any psychologist why they phrase questions in a strict way).

Was it a case of "What does this roadsign tell you?" or was it "What does the roadsign look like that tells you....?"

The former should get more accurate results, becuase that's the way the human mind is used to associating roadsigns with actions. The latter is the opposite way around, and the human mind isn't great at adding objects to both sides of the relationship.

Personally, I fall neatly into the above, ask me what a road sign says, and I can tell you, ask me what a road sign looks like for a given bit of information, and I'd stuggle on some of them.

Those numpties that want a "cash machine" sign should go out & buy SatNav.

No, no, no Baph. There's enough people with sat nav on their window screens obscuring their vision as it is. Downright dangerous.

This country has gone mad. Polish road signs now FFS

We'll be getting signs in txt language next so that all the neds and chavs can understand them.

One of the bike mags did a survey a while back (all sorts of road users- cyclists, car driver, etc.) no one got the "minimum speed" one, everyone got the "safety camera" one. The vast majority of motorists completely disregard road signs anyway, unless they're place names they're heading to.

That's the white circle with red border, showing a number in black writing in the middle, right? :rolleyes:

Very good!

I must confess, prior to reading the article, I didn't know what the minimum speed limit signs looked like either. Shame we don't get many of them on the roads.

Ta for the PM btw. :smt023

Was out with an IAM instructor Monday night with a radio link. Now this guy trains Police bikers & he was giving me a commentary of everything he was seeing. Pointing out absolutely every road sign, road paint everything and so early as well. But never once pointed out a speed camera or warning sign!

Wifi being wireless networking radio signals. Hot spot being an area where these signals are easily received.
