Gearbox Fix?
Hi all, done some research here and found the problem with me not being able to find neautral/seazed gearbox when standing is not uncommon. Tried saturation with WD40 still no good.
So, any idea what I'm looking at cost wise to fix it? Just had a major service to!:( Seems most people recommend a good clean, so it shouln'd be to much eh?[-o< Sean |
Re: Gearbox Fix?
1st issue is - is the oil level right? Too full and it wont engage
2nd - Check the condition of the gear level and linkage. If loose of warn, it can also make things difficult (Just changed the lever on Vernas bike and it works perfectly. 3rd - Clean and lubricate. Then its expensive bits, like selctor mechanisms, star whasits and the like. |
Re: Gearbox Fix?
Mine sticks every now & again. I just turn the ignition off, engage neutral, job done :) Cheap fix

Re: Gearbox Fix?
Every time I've had trouble with mine its been because I've overfilled the oil.

Just roll the bike forwards or backwards an inch and try again. Simple, and cheap. David |
Re: Gearbox Fix?
Tried the fixes and they worked for a while, now nothing works aside from a short coast to the lights - but I don't like coasting. Or if to late or when parking I have to hit the kill switch she then goes in sweet. GRRR..

Edit: When I occassionally have problems when I'm about to turn the bike on (when it's been running it's not a problem on my bike, except for when I overfilled the oil) and it won't find neutral, I do Soulkiss' suggestion, which has always worked for me. |
Re: Gearbox Fix?
When I was doing my DAS etc. a few years back I was taught to gently let the clutch lever go back to the biting point then pull the lever back in and try again (when this scenario presents itself).
Works every time for me.:) |

If the dogs on the gears are lined up badly, then no amount of force will make them engage. Hence the move the bike thing allows the dogs to reposition themselves and the gear to engage. I assume that the clutch trick does something similar. Or at least thats how I think it is ;P |
Re: Gearbox Fix?
Is your clutch adjusted correctly?
It's worth stripping the gear selector mechanism and giving it a damn good clean and regrease, you have several moving part there and if any one of them is a bit stiff (oo-er) then it could cause you an issue. The gearbox isn't normally an issue on the SV. |
