Kayaking

I am thinking of taking up kayaking as a poor weather alternative to kite buggying and riding.
I have found what I think to be a decent offer:
Dagger RPM Legend. Less than 12 months old with only normal surface scratches. Only used on flat water. Paddle included. Various instructional DVD's.
All for £240 with collection from Abingdon....
Are there any others on here that are into Kayaking that can me their opinions...............

Hmm, will be keeping an eye on this - I was up in the lakes last week and saw a load of people kayaking out on Ullswater. haven't done any myself since I was about 15 but really fancy getting into it again. I could probably do with becoming a stronger swimmer first though!

We talked about it last year and may do it in the near future. Sounds like a good deal you got there! Abingdon? How are they for water at the moment? You may be able to paddle it part of the way home!:D

The Dagger RPM is a bit of an old design. One of the early freeestyle boats, now used as a GP (General Purpose) kayak. £240 seems OK but remember is an old design.

Before buying a boat you need to ask yourself what kind of paddling you gonna do. If lakes and canals is your thing the RPM will be a pain. You want a longer, pointier boat that is able to be paddled with less effort.

If you want to move on to whitewater, then the RPM is a good start, but gets very tail happy on minor drops / eddylines since the rear is designed to 'squirt'. One of my friends was a reasonably good paddler when he bought his RPM (late 90s) and got spanked first time out.....

Give a holler if you have specific questions

Flat / open water water kayaking is bit boring IMHO. An open canoe is much more fun in this environment. As for swimming, well the aim is not to need to, but you should be able to swim 100m towing your (swamped) boat for safety on somewhere like Ullswater.

Didnt realise there was fellow paddlers on here.

I used to compete in slalom from about aged 8 until i was 19. Then I hurt my back competing in Austria and it was game over for me competing profesionally :(

I had a couple of year out and now just have a couple of playboats and compete in the odd freestyle event when i get the chance.

SV day out to holmepierpoint soon then ;)

Dose of the Trent trots? no thanks! I live 40 minutes from Tryweryn, so I boat there if I fancy. I'm a semi-retired boater these days. Might do some more this winter if my lad is around to drag me out.

I am mainly a river-runner, freestyle is kinda to radical for me! ;) Leave that to my kids. Last decent boating I got in was New Year in Fort Bill, had to evacuate the Etive after it rose 2 meters in an hour, Orchy was flooded out. We went burn bashing :p

BTW if anyone is interested, I have two creek boats for sale on behalf of my daughter. Both less than a year old, but used!

Riot Magnum - £450
Riot Thunder - £650

She now paddles for Jackson Kayak, so is getting rid of her Riot kit.

here, lucky, did you ever paddle a Perception Whip-it?

I used to take that out loads, lots of surfing too. Is that very past it now too then?
