What is wrong with my chain?!
Poxy thing has only been on the bike for 4,000 miles and I think its on its way out. I'm having to adjust the chain every day (100 miles) as it keeps stretching.
Weirdest thing is that today its not as loose as it has been. But its still clonking like its going to snap off. Any ideas why its doing this? |
Re: What is wrong with my chain?!
Once fitted from new you could expect a little adjustment to be needed as it settles down, but shouldn't need regular ones after that until it's on it's way out.
Either you've let it dry out and the "o" rings have given up. didn't buy an O-ring chain in the first place Or of course haven't lubed it at all. As you say you've only done 4,000 mile on it then it's only a month or two old ? if none of the above is applicable then send it back as it's faulty. Cheers Mark. |
Re: What is wrong with my chain?!
Afternoon all.
Depends on what make & grade it was, & as pointed out how it's been looked after. Some of the cheaper chains on the market could wear out in this mileage. It would be best to replace it along with the sprockets to be on the safe side. Cheers . |
Re: What is wrong with my chain?!
My son (the cheapskate) fitted a cheap non o ring chain on his CBF600, it lasted 1000 miles before it snapped on the M6 at 80MPH.
The original Honda chain gave him 16000 miles with no problems. He's now splashed out on a decent O ring chain & sprocket kit and has had no problems since. Did you fit the new chain onto old sprockets? That will make the chain deteriorate faster than normal. |
Re: What is wrong with my chain?!
I was contemplating putting and afam chain on but decided to let my Suzuki dealer fit an official Suzuki one along with new sprockets when the service came up. They were the same price and the original last 16,000 miles before it gave up so I thought why not.
I look after my chain too! I do 500 miles a week and I make sure it gets a coat of Wurth Chain Lube atleast once a week. |
Re: What is wrong with my chain?!
Mine did exactly the same - went from just over half way along the adjusters to off the end in the space of the Assen MotoGP weekend (although it did last 9k).
I got a 530 inssead of the original 525. Heavier duty but no more expensive - might be worth considering ............. |
Re: What is wrong with my chain?!
Its clonking as the wheel rotates? It does this on a paddock stand? Is the wheel correctly aligned? When adjusted correctly can you pull it away from the sprocket at mid position? (well stretched if so)

Spray loob should be applied every 200 miles or so, basically to keep the "o" rings moist. the last SV chain I had lasted 54,600 miles although that did have a scottoiler fitted and was never allowed to run dry. Cheers Mark. |
