How specky am I?

I've just had my eyes tested. Theres nothing wrong with them as such, it's just I've started to notice my arms are getting shorter and I can't hold the paper far enough away to read small print! Alternatively, by the time the paper is at the right distance, the print is now so small I can't bloody see it!

Anyway, not knowing if I needed a magnifying glass or a telescope, I thought I'd get em looked at. And it's free in Scotland...

So the prescription is +6 and +5 and that's the question - how specky am I? Does the scale go 0-100 in which case I could get some reading glasses from the petrol station or does it go 0-10 in which case I should really be pricing up white sticks?

Don't know how specky you are, but I'm at -4.5 in each eye, so I have to hold stuff real close to see it.

Dunno, sounds like you are very long sighted.

Maybe this will help. dunno what it means!!

A +10 diopter lens, which has a focal length of 10 centimeters, would make a good magnifying glass. Eyeglass lenses are usually much weaker, because eyeglasses do not work by magnifying; they work by correcting focus. The eye itself has a refractive power of 60 diopters.
I'm shortsighted, -2.5 and -3

I'm -5.50 and -6.50. Does this mean you are long-sighted (I presume so since I'm short-sighted)?

Sounds like you need sonar

Or milk-bottle bottoms ;)

You might be lucky and find some off the shelf, but don't be dissapointed if you don't. That's a serious prescription that you have.

Oh, and from the description (i.e. seeing distance okay but not close up stuff) you're long-sighted

Think yerself lucky. The cornea of my right eye was messed up by a coldsore (yes a coldsore) when i was a kid. The lens I need to correct the vision in my right eye is so strong, my brain gets all confused and i see double - hence now i just rely on my left eye (with no need for a lens). apparently i am still fine to drive as my brain corrects the right image somehow - clever things brains.

I'd agree though that you'd be unlikely to get any decent glasses off the shelf. Using the wrong glasses (or none) can make your vission deteriorate still further as you strain your muscles to focus.

It was exactly that 'explanation' that made me ask the Org!

Now that's an answer for the layman! You have confirmed my fears, but thanks anyway.

So, anybody remember the Viz character 'Specky ****? That's me that is.
