Damn engine mounting nut
 

Hi guys,

Just trying to fit a set of r&g`s to a 02 faired curvey.

I cant get the damn main engine mounting nut and bolt loose..I think i might have knackered the nut in the process as my socket is now slipping off :(

Do i have any other options here?...would i be able to cut the nut off do you think?

Had exactly the same problem yesterday. In the end, a good dose of WD40, a longer ratchet and a bit of manhandling, it did come off. Cutting the nut, you risk damaging the frame I think. Have you tried 'undoing' both nut and bolts side?

I think the nut is too rounded now :( none of my sockets will stay on. its just not moving...any other ideas guys ??

Okay, don't panic.

If it were me, I'd first of all soak it in tons of WD40 or penetrating oil and heat it for a long period with a paint stripping gun - Not getting too close with it though.

The heat is very important and can make all the difference, when applied for a long period - not 30 seconds - more like 6 or 7 minutes will expand various things and hopefully break some seals.

Then give it a load more oil and try some mole grips.


Although it's too late to do anything about it now, in future bolts like this are best undone with an impact gun rather than by hand. The gun pretty much eliminates the chances of this occurring and is far safer to you, and minimises risk of damaging other things by exerting tons of force by hand.

Is the original part a bolt or a 2-ended bar? The R&G replacement is a bar, I know that much.

Deep sockets will quite possibly help- the nut can be threaded far enough on that a regular socket won't grip well.

Its a bolt, there is still a little bit grab using a socket but the edges are rounding off, is it worth waiting and taking it somewhere to try an impact wrench on before i resort to heating etc? Or will the wrench make things worse now i have damaged the nut?

If it was me, I'd keep attacking it, but that's really your decision, depends on your own confidence etc. That'd be a sod of a bolt to drill out though, so, if you're at all unsure it might be time to call the pros.

Im not shy of doing things myself, i just dont want to damage it beyond the point of no return, Would an impact gun still work on a damaged (rounded) nut? if so i might take it at the weekend now the lowers are off

Are you alreading using an impact socket on it (6 sided not 12 sided)? That's the first step. But if it's rounded off the impact socket probably won't help - it's more for use *before* it's screwed up :p

have you tried a slightly smaller socket (a old imperial one ) and hammer this over the rounded nut? ive found this to work a few times . oh the socket is knackerd afterward so use a old one......good luck
