Chain tension
 

When checking chain tension, do you measure the chain from its static position to its point of maximum movement or do you press the chain down and measure from that point to its oppositite point of movement?

Um...not sure exactly what you are asking, but I just look at the middle of the bottom part of the chain between the front and rear sprockets and see maximum deflection. Also might want to consider more than one spot in the chain as there is a possibility that it could be different...If someone has a better way...by all means:smt071

Morning all.
Measure the full up & down movement of the chain, midway along the bottom run.
Find the tightest point of the chain, & with the bike on it's sidestand, aim for 30mm of up & down movement.

Does it make a difference if you have the back end up on a paddock stand on the amount of play you should look for?

Yes it does. You need some pressure on the back wheel.

My paddock stand attaches to the wheel end of the swing arm, so there is still the weight of the bike pushing the suspension down, so I figure this is ok. If it was an abba stand or similar I presume this is when it could cause issues.

Just to be save rather than sorry do it on the paddock stand and then remeasure when on side stand. It you do it too tight you risk damaging your engine. Too lose and you will have noisy gear changes and risk that the chain will miss a tooth on your sprocket and block your rear wheel.

Have you got a torque wrench? You need that to tighten the main nut.

i never used one on my bikes i found the suzuki nuts and bolt far to weak.
