Getting ready for the Winter Commute
Although I commuted all last winter without doing anything special to the bike, I just thought perhaps it would be good to see if there is anything I can do to take extra care of my bike?
I noted no deteriation of anything last year, althourgh I did try to ensure that it got a proper wash and wax (weather permitting) every week. Also, I can't seem to find when my next service is due last one was at 11k I think...... |
Re: Getting ready for the Winter Commute
I found far and away the best thing for more enjoyable winter riding was good waterproof kit, followed by bar muffs (even if they look silly). Heated grips won't hurt, either. As to looking after the bike, mine has never had any special treatment for winter and doesn't look any worse for it.

Re: Getting ready for the Winter Commute
Spraying some FS365 (or whatever scottoiler call it) or ACF50 (I'm reliably informed a mix of parafin and cheap car oil is as good and a lot less money) on all the parts of your bike you're worried about corroding may help. Brake discs don't count......

Re: Getting ready for the Winter Commute
ACF-50, two cans,£20 from Busters Motorcycle Accessories.
It's a bit more technical than oil and parafin, and doesn't wash off like FS365. It has kept my K5 looking mint through two winters of commuting. |

I have my muffs on now, and I wear a drysuit over my kit to keep dry. At present, I can ride in summer gloves with the muffs on, but I need my winter gloves without the muffs. I wore my winter gloves and my muffs today - stupidly hot! Heated grips would be great with the muffs, mega toasty! Oh, and keep your visor clean as much as you can. Other than that, everything you've said about your previous winter commutes is what I do, and my curvy isnt falling to bits (yet) Matt |
