TBH it looks fine to me, nothing much needs doing to it

Any "flashier" and you will be looking at big money I think - but as I am not in the Webdesign business I could be wrong.

Personally stick with it.

Main thing is that its updated

I think it looks OK too (mostly), but as above, the major thing is that its kept up to date with any content. Same applies to any website otherwise its pointless putting it there in the first place.

For me the amount of words on a page in places, and the nav bars are the main points I thought about...but you tend to find developers are particular about appearances ....just not their own ;)

Most hosting companies now offer easy to use design tools for doing half-decent stuff which, if kept up-to-date as said above will be perfect for you.

My wife is a total novice and managed to do her own as did I. I used www.networksolutions.com for mine.

I was happy with the result.

I have a web design team at work who do private work, but they would charge about £300 for a basic 5 page website, with nothing flash. The only problem with that is that it is better if future updates are done by them too.

Which gives you an on cost. I would say that the current site doesn't look too bad and with the templates, design tools and a few hours anyone could do it justice.

Stewie, I'd just like to echo what others have said ... content, content, content.

IMO all it needs is a slightly better navigation system, and a perhaps a slightly better layout. Two other things I would add ... include a "site/page last updated" statement on every page, and also include the years in the dates.

Content needs to be up to date otherwise it's not worth the bother.

Only minor changes needed otherwise though 8)

Cheers,
Pete

p.s. I don't do web design any more ... in fact, I never REALLY did it at all ... however I did spend 4 years building an Intranet from scratch and then maintaining it ;-) and in spite of this, I'm still too embarrassed to post my own website up as I don't update it nearly as often as I should, or as I would like ... in fact, I have a couple of websites but all bar one are actually "projects in progress" LMAO wot?! I'm too busy riding my bike ;-) LOL
